Screening History

Premiering February 7, 2012, 'Shining Night: A Portrait of Composer Morten Lauridsen opened the American Documentary Film Festival in Palm Springs, California with a live performance of Lauridsen's works by the USC Chamber Singers. Following the film was a Q&A session with film director Michael Stillwater and composer Morten Lauridsen.

The film has been screened at film festivals and choral festivals across America and Europe, often with choral performances. At several of these festival screenings, the director and composer have offered Q&A sessions following the film.

The New York premiere, introduced by composer/conductor Eric Whitacre, opened a weekend of Lauridsen's music at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. In Copenhagen the film opened the Danish Film Festival. At the national convention of American Choral Directors Association, Shining Night was featured in their first film festival, together with The Singing Revolution and Requiem for My Mother. Choral director Nicol Matt introduced the film to South Africa for the Mozart Festival; Lauridsen's 70th birthday tour included screenings in London (hosted by David Wordsworth and Addison Singers), Cambridge (Suzi Digby and Queens College Singers), Cardiff (Paul Mealor and Cordydd) and Copenhagen (Saul Zaks and choir).

Best Documentary awards have been received from DC Independent Film Festival, Eugene International Film Festival, Friday Harbor Film Festival and Asheville Cinema Festival. Best Documentary nomination at Cincinnati Film Festival. Los Angeles Movie Awards gave the film an Honorable Mention, and it took Bronze at the Oregon Movie Awards.

Responses to the film, including the original review by Wall Street Journal writer, Terry Teachout, and a video of commentaries from America and Scotland, can be seen here.
